#22: Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod July 23rd, 2006

I’m both happy and sad about this week’s podcast. I’m happy because I’ve wanted this amazing Mountain Goats song to be part of SFoT right from the beginning. I played this song daily for close to a year; it was stuck in my head for five months, shattering the previous four-month record held by “Raspberry Beret”; and now I’ve finally, finally had a chance to do it for the podcast. (No CC license on this one, obviously.) I can’t think of a better way to wrap up half a year of Shoebox Full of Tapes, which is what this coming Saturday will mark.
And that’s where we get to the sad part: I’m pretty much out of songs at this point. See, unlike Jonathan Coulton, I can’t write a song every week. I average about four per year that I want to keep, actually. So, after this week, “we”, meaning me, will be “in reruns” for a while, meaning that I’m re-podcasting these first six months in the original order.
The second time around, I’m hoping to clean up the metadata, as well as make things like volume and EQ a little more consistent. Some of them won’t change much at all, but others ought to be much improved. And maybe there’ll be some other pretties, like photos (I’ve got a box of those too), or explications that I didn’t do the first time around. I’ll do what I can for you guys. It’ll be cool, I think.
The new Mountain Goats record comes out August 22. They’ll be touring, too. See them. Buy it.
Thanks for listening.

This song is absolutely amazing…. exactly how do you manage to avoid fame and fortune for so long? As of this post, you are now officially a hit in Johnson City.. 11 out of 15 people immediately fell in love with you after hearing this recording at my coffeehouse.. and I’m going through the other ones… and my knees are weak and my jaw is wide open- So yeah, I’m distributing you down here and you may get a call about a Knoxville-Bristol-Johnson City-Asheville NC tour if you’re up for it. That and it is officially the plan to be in Portland in 9 months. Whomever isn’t going with me there can stay here. It’s weird… I actually feel a little intimidated by you. I don’t really get intimidated easily– but I have a secret fear that everything I love you may have already heard of and I won’t be able to give anything back. But then I actually like being intimidated sometimes– it’s a nice change from what I’m used to. You have a wonderful gift– gosh I was going through and I do the same thing you do with the practice rooms… I’m trying to figure out how to play “Wise Up” by Aimee Mann in there. Weird. Okay. Well you take it easy and I’ll go do something I’m supposed to do. Cheers!

[…] It started innocently enough: the downloading of a cover from Lindsey Kuper’s rockstargirl.org—her podcast for that week. I listened to it when I got it, but I wasn’t smitten yet. After making a Lindsey Kuper CD for a friend I made myself one, too. I soon found myself listening to Kuper’s cover of “Hast Thou Considered The Tetrapod” more often than not, but I wasn’t taken yet. One night I was watching UITV and caught the video of “This Year”, a song off of The Mountain Goats’ new album, “The Sunset Tree”. Although it was like “hey! An artist I recognize and…wow, this is good shit”, I wasn’t obsessed yet. But, as this week has progressed I’ve found myself listening to it more often than anything else—Kuper’s songs, the The Dresden Dolls’ “Yes, Virgina” or Ani DiFranco’s latest. Still, I wasn’t quite besotted yet. Then, this afternoon, the student-run radio station here at the University of Iowa, KRUI 89.7, played “This Year” by request. And I got online and read up on The Mountain Goats, soon running across this page of session recordings. And I was smitten. […]

Brooks — wow, thanks. Eleven out of fifteen? Did you take a poll? Anyway, if you think I’ve already heard of everything good, you’re very much mistaken!
Nick — Yes! Yes! Yes! Except that, actually, Sunset Tree isn’t the new one; Get Lonely is.

Hey Lindsey. Sounds pretty good, although I have to admit, I haven’t heard of the original artist before. I know people will be shocked and scream blasphemy on that one ;). It’s been a few years since a volunteered at a campus radio station, so I am not in the know of all the latest artists anymore.
Sorry I haven’t stopped by in quite a while. I don’t want to feel like I am always just around when I want something or anything liket that. I guess I am feeling repentent as Yom Kippur draws nearer, whose to say.
I decided to put something up on the myspace that we have been neglecting to put up on the site since Still Coming Together sold out, that being your old cover of “Thru The Eyes of Ruby”. I know you don’t think it’s your best work, and you’re not obligated to tell everyone to go listen to it. I just thought I’d mention it.
We should chat sometime, catch up. I promise to not mention Act IV or The Smashing Pumpkins or Flux a.d. at all, no matter how tempted I maybe (although the last one, I don’t talk about anymore really anyways :P).
the night has come to hold us young,
David

Allright, Everybodyfields, 24 Hour Front Desk and Dixie Dirt coming your way. All stuff I am absolutely certain you haven’t heard of. Be ready for it.. I’ve had your address now for like 3 months and I haven’t done anything with it yet. It’s about frickin’ time. Enjoy. And I’ll be back in Portland in January for like 2 days around the 11th 12th 13th. So keep an eye out for good shows around this time. I expect to be impressed. Ciao!

P.S. I’m totally pissed off I’m missing the Islands on November 7th. If you can make it you owe it to yourself to get to Disjecta at that time. Apparently tickets are 11 bucks and they’re gonna sell out. So get there and buy the Islands CD. I promise you will be impressed.

I heard that Linsdey is busy at work applying to graduate schools. But I really think should see this. This is a bulletin that was posted on Myspace by Mike Garson, one of her influences:
a repost for mike garson…
When David Bowie called Mike Garson to ask him to play with him on his upcoming tour, neither was aware that this collaboration
would turn into a successful working relationship which would last almost 34 years.
Since then, the music world has changed drastically, especially due to the internet and greater communication. Artists therefore have had to move with the times in order to stay relevant as well as holding onto what makes them innovative and interesting in the first place.
Understanding this, Mike has established himself on myspace, and to date has released over 50 songs as free downloads, as well as nurturing new talent, something which is of great interest to him.
Through myspace Mike has recorded for such great acts such as Kuta, and Lost Dog in Loveland who he has collaborated with to produce new and exciting tracks, and he would like to extend the invitation to new or existing bands out there who would like his distinctive sound on their recordings. All this can be done from his home studio, where he will add his unique piano sound to tracks that are sent to him, cutting out many of the problems of the past!
To this end, Mike will be available to record on acts which he enjoys and feels he can contribute to. sometimes he just doesn’t “HEAR” anything but when he does he accepts the project. Mike has set a special session rate that most bands can afford, far within the reach of unsigned acts .
If you want more information on how to have Mike Garson play with you, please email and add in the email attention alex mikegarson@gmail.com or send a message to myspace.com/mikegarson
we would love to hear from you!

David, that is awesome. It’s true I’m pretty swamped with things not related to music right now, but I’ll try and make time to check it out.
